http://www.furfashionguide.com/ has a listing of fake furs, some that could be good in making your fursuit, though some may not like the look of the site, which seems to cater to the fur coat crowd.

Local mom & pop stores
Another great source, that may have some things that the national chains may not even have. They can range from tiny shops, a small selection, to a huge place, maybe a full store, multiple floors, etc.

Somewhat overpriced, though a nice place. This is also a three-story building loaded with fabrics with a commercial supplier. The first floor has regular fabrics, notions, needles, including patterns and sewing machines. Second floor has fake furs, as well as remnants, even more fabrics, and some dancewear. Third floor has upholstery, drapery, and foam. If you go, plan on spending an hour or two to look around.

Comments RTRabbit: The address is 1000 Main Ave. in Clifton (walking distance from downtown) but the building is practically on the border between Clifton and Passaic. The RED brick warehouse structure is set way back from the sidewalk, you have to walk down a vehicle a ramp to reach the building. Then turn RIGHT and go to the end of the building. You'll see a sign that says Clifton Asssociates, Faux Fabrics on the fence. Round the corner of the building is a narrow iron stairway going up to the second floor, reaching a door with the company name. Ring the doorbell. I recommend also calling that toll free number first to make sure someone is inside and to advise you're visiting.

Getting there from Port Authority NYC…NJ Transit bus #190, from Paterson…#74, from Newark–City Subway to Branch Brook Park then transfer to bus #74. Also Spanish Transit mini-bus service both from NYC and Paterson run by there too. However if on the bus from NYC, after passing downtown Passaic, note the building numbers rising through the 800's and 900's, and from the right side of the bus you'll see a sign that says 1000. Inward from that then you'll see the red warehouse.

Be prepared to spend some time there.

Another source of general fake fur - more coat focused. They are open from 10-4pm (EST), Monday-Friday only. Check their catalog for their lines.

[Note: 1 yd = 0.9144 m, and all prices are US prices]

They also sell books on sewing the fur. They lean towards coats, but the seaming techniques might apply to costuming as well. One thing I noticed is that the fur has a stiff backing, and is not very stretchy. Might make for a *very* hot and stiff costume.

Good general fake fur at reasonable prices. They have a sample package you can order of their selections, for US$5.00, CDN$10.

They have a minimum order of one roll, which is 15 yards or US$100, whichever comes first. Nice people and they love to hear what weird things you plan to do with their fur….and they want pictures too.

According to the pricelist, which is currently dated June 2000, they also sell stuffing. They've got white polyester, white preprocessed polyester, pastel polyester, and mixed fiberfill in various colors. They have a handling charge of $5, and prefer shipping via UPS. They accept VISA, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express.

From: Christopher John Thomas
Subject: Re: FL: Endorsement for Monterey Mills.

Fur price varies quite a bit. Decent-quality shag is something like $9.60 (could be off by a few cents). The “Cubby Bear” fur that comprised most of my order was $11.65. The “Teddy Bear Jr” fur that was the remaining roll in my order was $15, and is being discontinued soon according to the sheet. Most expensive fur was a bit over $16/yd.

The rolls are still about 60 inches wide (I think it's 58 to 60 inches, depending on what you get).

The fur that I use for fox fur is Cubby Bear style, colour “red fox”. However, they do sell a variety of fur as “Fox”, which comes in white and tawny-brown.

The contact person is still very nice, and quite helpful, as previously described. It seemed to be the same person all three times I called (over a couple of weeks).

None of the fur I've seen from them is stretchy. It's all sliver-knit stuff on a non-stretch backing.

Pickings for solid colours (often with realistically grainy texture) are good (with a couple of exceptions), but their tiger and spotted-cat fur is not suitable for fursuiting use (fluorescent tiger and unrealistic spot patterns on extremely short pile).

They ship within 48 hours of receiving the order, and can ship and bill to two separate addresses. They ship via UPS, though, so you're taking your chances if you send anything across the border (I've had bad experiences).

Super Premium fake fur and Premium Prices!

If you want to calculate the cost of your fur, then be prepared for a bit of sticker shock. They have a setup charge of $225.00 for each run. This means that if you want a short black fur, a long white fur and a short white fur, that would be $675 right there, plus your per-square-foot charges. Note that this is per SQUARE foot, not LINEAR foot. You must take into consideration the minimums of 8 square feet, which they could waive if you're ordering enough fur. Their furs come in any length pile, from 1/8“ to 12” long with the standard length 5-7“. The widths are about 42” wide for the 2-way stretch or standard. The 4-way stretch ranges from 42“-18” (very heavy Wolf with a base hair is about 42“ wide and Werewolf super sparse is 18” wide). In addition to all that, specialty request can cost more (using Yak hair, extra-long fibers or trimmed fibers and so on).

Though their furs are aimed more at looks and utility than tactical sensation, their Modacrylic and Nylon furs feel more coarse than silky, but they do carry specialty short soft fibers such as Mohair and Alpaca. Many of their clientele are in museums and the movie industry. Thus, money can be no object to some of these people. They have any number of tricks that they can do, and are constantly experimenting on their technique. Lace backed fur; four-way stretch, ultra-fine/short “bird fur” (which can look like stretch felt or fleece) and even variable-density and variable-length furs can be done.

They recently introduced White Fursuiter Fur as a stock fur; which is on a 4-way stretch backing, a 5-7“ pile, nylon guard hair with rayon base fur. This can easily be dyed with a RIT type of dye or a magic marker can be used, and it is airbrushable. This is $35/sq foot; stock number is CF 1460. There is no setup charge for stock furs or minimums required. They have other stock furs, around $30-$35/sq foot.

Their four-way stretch super stretch furs are great for costumes that will be subject to a lot of movement. (*Warning* 4-way stretch is the kind that stretches in all directions; “2-way or standard” means that it has minimal stretch in an X-Y direction, left and right, but not up and down!) The fur is made on a circular knitting machine using 800 needles with a diameter of 24” and when taken off the mill can shrink down to 18“ depending on the density and fiber used. That's a pretty good deal of stretch (you figure out the actual percentages!) Since the back of the fur can be somewhat rough, especially if Yak is used, you might want to line it as well.

They have a huge variety of furs, colors and blends (you can even get fur that has both guard hair and base hair or undercoat). Their color ring is well worth the $75.00, especially when ordering. The carry a sample kit of stock furs for $65. If you are just curious, try to find someone who has a sample pack and bribe'em to show it to you!

If you're doing a realistic critter, tell them the type and color, they may well already have a blend worked out (for instance, because the might've just done the fur for a lion's exhibit).

They also sell conditioners, shampoos, and a spray conditioner to help take care of your final product.

The process used to make the fur is quite interesting. They use old wig-knitting machines that do, literally, knit all the fibers together. These machines haven't been made for about 100 years and have been modified or custom milled to be able to produce multiple types of fur.

When you order, you may talk with Fred Fehrmann or Kim Clark. They are both someone you can talk with about what you want, and can help you decide before you order. They will send you a brochure with a price list if you request it. (If you e-mail them for this info don't forget to include your address and telephone number.)

One word of warning, *DO NOT* screw these people around. These guys are serious about their business. If you actually have something in mind and are serious about it, you can have them make a sample of it, just to make sure you two are on the same page. If you go this far, you must be prepared to order and have the cash in hand-another good reason to order the sample/color kit. Many Fursuiters who have used them have a good relationship with them, and would be very upset if they heard about someone screwing NFT over.

There're ways to get around the high costs of the fur. A good way to do this is to gang-order as much as possible at one time. The larger the order, the more likely they are to give you some concessions or discounts, and could waive the 8 sq foot minimum order. Unfortunately, this has the obvious problem of finding several people who: 1) Need the same fur/color/length as you;
2) All have the $$$ at the same time; and
3) Need to receive it alt the same time.

Minimum delivery time is about two weeks, though they can make it in less time, but for a fee or an extra percentage of the cost. It depends also on their workload, though Fred will warn you of a large upcoming job that may interfere with the delivery time.

In short, it does not hurt to request a sample pack for $65.00, which includes the Fursuiter fur and the other stock furs.

You may have to pay up to $20/yd ($US20/0.9144 m) for some of the fake furs, but they can be found to match almost any natural fur. Check with taxidermy supply companies or with some of the mascot companies (Alinco sells fake furs). And there's always airbrushing!

This is a very friendly company to deal with geared to the short yard consumer. There is no minimum order but there is a cutting charge if you order less than 5m. of most fabrics. Anything that cost more than $8.00/ metre has no cutting charge as a general rule. Presently they stock short pile furs, in a variety of decorator colors ($9.25/m) as well as four prints: Holstein, Leopard, Tiger, Dalmation.($16.70/m) They also stock some Persian Lamb ($20.35/m) and Sherpa lining. ($8.95/m)

These prices are current as of March 2000 and are listed in Canadian Funds.

The catch is you must be a business in order to order from them. Proof required? Business card and one other piece of ID (tax number, business name registration copy, business account at a financial institution etc.)

You don't have to have a business license, just be a business or a representative of one. home-based businesses qualify. You can create your own brand new design studio if need be.

They can also hunt and special order if you are having trouble finding that 'special' fur, but cost and minimum order vary in those circumstances.

I have purchased from there in person, to the best of my recollection, their hours of operation are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm cst. That may change in the future. Best to call and ask.
