Zippers

How to hide a zipper (courtesy of Oncilla) - http://www.nicodemus.org/fursuit/zippers.php

- back, hidden by velcro and fur
- front, hidden by chest fur and velcro
- side, hidden by vest or fur?
- on shoulders?
- between legs?

Here's my technique for hiding a zipper: I put mine on the front on the left-hand side seam between the belly fur and the shell fur. I use an “Invisible Zipper”, which is designed for for this very kind of application. I line up the teeth with the edge of the fur and hand sew the zipper in, using medium-length stitches that I carefully loop just under the fur backing, slipping the needle through just across the backing so that I don't catch any of the pile with my stitches.

When done in this fashion, the zipper will butt the two pieces of fur right against each other and no one can even tell that there is a zipper seam there. The zipper pull is small, so it hides nicely in the fur at the top of the neck. Since it's on the front of the costume, it's very easy to get to, so unless you're doing an attached glove, you should have no trouble getting to the small pull and zipping and unzipping the costume.

I will admit that I've only done this with medium-pile fur (no more than 1“ pile). You'd probably get a lot of snags with anything longer. But for those medium-pile furs, it's a great way of hiding the zipper without extra flaps and velcro and such.
