Subj: Pawpads using silicone caulk
This is one area of innovation that I developed for this suit. I wanted nice, realistic paw and hand pads, but I needed them to be cushiony for walking. I just didn't want to cut up something else that looked 'okay'
First thing, I sculpted the shapes that I wanted for the pads. I didn't double the finger and toe pads, as I planned on making permanent molds and could then make as many as I needed. I used Super Sculpy for this step.
I grabbed a piece of glass, and placed the sculpy pads on it covered with a light coating of petroleum jelly. I then mixed up some plaster and covered the pads, making sure to get out the airbubbles as best as possible.
Once the pads were carefully removed from the molds. I cleaned them up a little. Then I put two, very light, brushed-on coats of Latex mold rubber, which I found at a local art store. I found GE Silicon II brand silicon at the local Home Depot. I like this stuff because it comes in caulking gun sized tubes, in various colors included black. I then built up several layers of silicon, allowing each to partially cure before applying the next. I made sure I worked out all the airbubbles in the first coat, so the pads would be smooth. Once they were cured, I used the latex layer to pull the pads out of the molds. The latex won't bond to the silicon, so it peels off nicely, leaving a slightly textured, shiny black finish. I also used this for my nose and it worked excellent.
